Partners in Health

—[ Q & A ]—

We face a lot of pressure to start the New Year off right. Perfect health, renewed gym membership, no more bad habits. Can anybody ever really be that perfect? Perhaps not. But if general wellness is your concern, you may have to look no further than your partner.

Q. How does my partner influence my wellness?
We share a lot of things with our significant others. Taste in music, political affiliations, and more importantly, health and wellness habits. If our partner smokes, drinks, or is a health nut, we may follow suit. Couples tend to develop rituals as part of the bonding process, but these rituals aren’t always the most healthy.

Q. What if my partner’s habits aren’t so healthy?
That’s an important realization, and one you could both look at in terms of the long run. For example, if one partner quits smoking or gives up alcohol, the other is several times more likely to follow suit.

What can we do to improve the state of our wellness together?
Create a new, healthy, soul-inspiring weekly ritual you can both do together. Find a secluded bluff along the coast and sit in silence together, go hiking, or attend a healthy cooking workshop.
