Hurray for Mille Feuille and Chocolat, two new cafes in San Diego performing magic with cocoa and serving casual, gourmet fare as well. Renowned French pastry chef Thomas Gérard presents customers at Mille Feuille with intricate cakes and truffles served in a bright, slick atmosphere. The café’s namesake patisserie, “mille feuille,” doesn’t go missing either. The recipe involves puff pastry layered with creamy vanilla-rum custard. Sandwiches such as chicken curry, proscuitto with heirloom tomatoes or tuna with artichokes are served on artisan breads made on site. Weekends herald dessert buffets, and high tea is offered daily.
Sexy gelatos incorporating unexpected ingredients reign supreme at Chocolat. The company blends six different cocoa powders from around the world, achieving two dozen flavors using balsamic vinegar, anise, chilies, citrus fruits and more. Purists will revel in the café’s dark chocolate gelato, which boasts a strong and divinely bitter quality. The icy confections give way to sprightly salads, savory crepes, grilled paninis and carpaccio.
