Awash in Lights

by Frank Sabatini Jr.

San Diego’s most cherished kickoff to the holiday season, December Nights, will feature expanded light displays and other new attractions to mark the 31st year of the popular event, which attracts nearly 300,000 visitors annually. The festivities will take place from 5 to 10 p.m., Dec. 5 and noon to 10 p.m., Dec. 6, around the Organ Pavilion and other areas throughout Balboa Park. In addition to international food and free theatrical entertainment, the event will feature a first-time lighting of the park’s famous Moreton Bay fig tree. Dramatic illuminations can also be seen in the Plaza de Panama’s expanded entertainment area. At the Palisades Midway, visitors will discover a full-size ice-skating rink and “Taste of December Nights” tailored for kids. And for those 21 years and older, the new Holiday Spirits Lounge awaits for enjoying cocktails and live music.
