The skincare community is buzzing with discussion about the oxygen facial, the current darling of celebrities. Many commit to regular treatments, which is said to have an immediate hydrating and smoothing effect. Most exclusive spas now offer this service, which usually involves a multi-step process of cleansing, exfoliation, vitamin-rich hydration and a stream of pressurized oxygen.

Like any growing trend, oxygen facials are not without skeptics. Some dermatologists say that people are spending too much money for a treatment with effects that don’t last longer than a few days, at most.

However, the treatment is also being offered by many dermatologists, though it is a cosmetic procedure. Proponents enjoy the brightening, rejuvenating effect the treatment seems to have. The oxygen is thought to increase circulation and stimulate cell regeneration, nourishing the skin. Our skin is exposed to a constant onslaught of solar rays and environmental toxins; regular oxygen facials may combat the dulling effects of the daily damage.
