While granite remains fashionable, there is now a wide array of fully green countertop products available. Lee Hawley, AKBD and past president of the San Diego Chapter of NKBA, explains that architectural paper-composite (Richlite is a reputable brand) is an exciting option. Recycled glass and metals like zinc and copper are also available, as well as engineered stone, which uses remnant pieces. Naturally abundant quartz is another current trend. Helene is seeing an increased use of softer stones like marble, soapstone and lava stone (such as Pyrolave).

Farmhouse sinks are still prevalent, and are now being made with two to three sections instead of one large one. Norma comments that they are often seen in other than the original fired clay material; options include copper, brass, stainless and ceramic. Cement sinks are another frequent choice, or sinks in the same material as the countertop which creates an integrated look. But stainless steel has not lost its popularity, and there are now many interesting shapes to choose from. Helene says, “Trough-shaped secondary sinks are sometimes placed toward the center of an island where they can be filled with ice and drinks or flowers when entertaining.”

According to Helene, motion sensors on faucets are more common now as well. She says, “They are of a better quality than the ones we use at the airport, and they make dinner prep a dream.”
